Biografia
Biography
Luis Antonio Sanguino was born in 1934 in Barcelona, Spain
He was addicted to sculpting from an early age. When he was very young he used the wax from the candles in his house to make little statues which he hid under his bed. From the beginning of his education, he was an advanced student and progressed under the tutelage of sculptor Coullaut Valera. Valera quickly recognized that he had in his hands an outstanding boy with a bright future.
When he was only 21 years of age, Luis began his first important work: eight heroic-sized monks carved in stone and situated above the pews in the “Valley of the Fallen” near Madrid. The "Valley of the Fallen" was a basilica constructed inside of a mountain to become the tomb of General Francisco as well as a church. This project took three years and was the beginning of Luis' long and successful career which was at first shared between Spain and America.
In New York City he was introduced to several prominent American businessmen (especially Samuel and May Rudin and sons Louis and Jack) who recognized his talent and commissioned him to design and sculpt large figures for their commercial buildings, including at least one museum, as well as figures for their private art collections.
The Rudens commissioned him to sculpt a memorial to “The Immigrants” which stands in Battery Park, near Ellis Island and the ferry to the Statue of the Liberty. He did busts of President John F. Kennedy and Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia. The latter is displayed in LaGuardia Airport. He also did an heroic bust of B.J. Palmer founder of the B.J. Palmer Chyropractic Institute in Davenport, Iowa; a statue of Diego de Gardoqui, Spain's Ambassador to the U.N.; and an heroic figure sculpted in salt for the international salt manufacturing company in Philadelphia. He also did innumerable smaller figures between 1962 and 1968 whence he returned to Spain.
His popularity grew as his talents made him proficient in working with various materials, including stone, marble, wood, clay and bronze.
In Spain he was asked to do an heroic statue of the author, Ernest Hemingway, which is prominently displayed in Pamplona, the city of the running of the bulls.
In 1976 Luis worked on several monuments for the city of Madrid and he was awarded the medal of “Isabel La Catolica” by the King, Don Juan Carlos II. .
In 1978 he had an offer to travel to Mexico and work for the government. He was there for eight years and created 72 monuments, including twelve figures of presidents, such as Moreles and Lopez Portillo, the fantastic image of Emilio Zapata and the many figures of "The Fountain of Life" dominated by Neptune in the Gran Plaza of Monterrey.
In 1986 he returned to Spain, to settle in the beautiful castle of Valdeprados, Segovia were he has continued to work and create significant monuments that stand in the streets and plazas of important cities. He has also continued to create statues and busts for private entities.
In Madrid his continued works include "El Yiyo", "Antonio Bienvenida" and a frieze called "The Bulls" all of which adorn the entrance to the Plaza de Toros of Las Ventas. Other prominent works include "The Fountain of the Woman’s Triumph", and the monument to the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century in San Blas, a monument in honor of Miguel of Cervantes, Spain's most famous author, and a statue of Manolete, perhaps Spain's most famous bullfighter.
In 2000 he was asked by the Cardenal of Madrid to sculpt the enormous bronze doors to the Almudena Cathedral and figures of the twelve Apostles which stand on the exterior of the Cupola.
Luis Sanguino has also done many monuments in other cities of Spain: In Sevilla they include monuments to Juanita Reina in the San Fernando Cemetery and of Angel Peralta in the museum of the Maestranza. In Marbella he placed "The Fountain of the Sun" which stands in a main street. In a Segovia rotary, he placed a monument to Candido, a famous cook and restaurant owner. For Oviedo he did three statues: "Peace", "Liberty" and "Life". Meanwhile he kept contact with America where he was requested by the Governor of Puerto Rico, Hernandez Colon, to do a fountain which illuminates The Paseo de la Princesa in the old San Juan.
Not yet willing to end his long and prolific career, he continues designing and modeling from his home and studio in Segovia. He is presently working on ten busts of important people for the city of Guadalajara, Spain, and he is working on various projects for the growing town of Navalcarnero near Madrid.
